Altach

History & character

From Traffic Settlement to Modern Community

Altach is a municipality with a long history, originating in the second half of the 12th century. At that time, the Staufer expanded the area as a traffic settlement to utilize the growing importance of the Alpine Rhine Valley as a transit route. The first documented mention as 'Altahe' dates back to September 17, 1249. Over the centuries, Altach changed hands several times, initially under the Habsburgs, then between Bavaria and Austria. Since 1861, Altach has been part of the federal state of Vorarlberg. The political separation from Götzis in 1801 marked another significant step in the development of the municipality.

Today, Altach, with 1336 inhabitants per square kilometer, is the most densely populated municipality in Vorarlberg. Situated at an altitude of 412 meters, the municipality is bordered in the northwest by the Rhine, which also serves as the border to Switzerland. Altach has evolved into a modern community that stands out for its proximity to nature as well as its transport connections.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
