History & character
From Lime Kilns to a Spa Village
Klaus was first mentioned in a document in 890 as 'ad Calcaires', referring to the lime kilns that once existed there. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Sulz community, which included other surrounding villages. The residents' livelihoods were based on livestock farming and grain cultivation, with viticulture gaining importance since the 12th century. In the 18th century, potato and maize cultivation began in the Rhine Valley. By the early 20th century, Klaus transformed from a wine village into a popular holiday destination, aided by its location on a south-facing terrace and above-average sunshine duration. Today, Klaus is a spa village with a picturesque setting, exuding the character of a tranquil residential area.
