History & character
From Rhaeto-Romanic Language Island to Modern Municipality
Weiler was first mentioned in a document in 1206 when the Alt-Montfort Castle was built. This castle, located on a prehistoric settlement hill, was an important structure of the Counts of Montfort. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times and was destroyed in 1405 during the Appenzell Wars. In the Middle Ages, Weiler was a Rhaeto-Romanic language island within the Alemannic language area and was part of the Bavarian municipality of Sulz at the end of the 18th century. In 1808, Weiler became independent, and after returning to Austria in 1815, the municipal boundaries were redefined. Today, Weiler is a vibrant municipality with 2275 residents, closely linked to the neighboring municipalities of Klaus and Röthis due to population growth and construction activities in recent years.
