History & character
From Vinomna to a Vibrant Market Town
Rankweil, located in the upper Vorarlberg Rhine Valley, was an important traffic junction during the Roman Empire under the name Vinomna. The first documented mention dates back to 842. In the Middle Ages, Rankweil came under Habsburg rule, administered from Tyrol and the Vorderösterreich region. In 1618, Rankweil was granted market rights. After various political affiliations, including with Bavaria, Rankweil has been part of Austria since the establishment of the federal state of Vorarlberg in 1918. The Liebfrauenbergkirche, elevated to a Basilica minor in 1985, also makes Rankweil known as a pilgrimage site. Today, the market municipality, with over 12,000 inhabitants, is the second largest in the Feldkirch district and plays an important role as an educational center with several higher schools.
