History & character
From Habsburg to Modern Living Spaces
The first written mention of a settlement in Zwischenwasser dates back to 1127. The region was under the rule of the Habsburgs, who governed Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Vorderösterreich. Between 1805 and 1814, Zwischenwasser belonged to Bavaria before returning to Austria. Since the founding of Vorarlberg in 1861, the municipality has been an integral part of this westernmost Austrian state. After World War II, Zwischenwasser was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955. Today, the municipality consists of the villages of Muntlix, Batschuns, and Dafins, which are located on the terrace slopes of the Freschen group. With 71% of its area forested and the highest elevation being the Hoher Freschen, Zwischenwasser offers a natural environment that ensures both tranquility and good connections to the surrounding communities.
