History & character
From Free Ownership to Villa District
Aigen, whose name comes from the Old High German "eigan", meaning "to have, to possess", originally referred to a place denoting inherited property. From 1850, Aigen developed into an independent local community and was completely incorporated into the city of Salzburg in 1939. The spirit of renewal following the 1848 Vienna Revolution and the construction of the Southern Railway led to intense building activity, resulting in numerous magnificent villas with large parks. These representative residences served as status symbols for wealthy citizens. Today, Aigen is known as one of the most expensive residential districts in Salzburg, characterized by a quiet, nature-rich environment. The district houses many prominent personalities and offers a high quality of life, shaped by its proximity to nature and well-maintained villa architecture.
