History & character
From Butter Supplier to Vibrant Community
The name "Sulzeberg" was first mentioned in a document in 1249. Around 1400, "Smaltzhuben uff dem Sultzberg" were noted, which supplied butter and cheese to the Counts of Bregenz. In the late Middle Ages, Sulzberg became an independent parish and court for the area of Sulzberg-Doren, Riefensberg, and Oberlangenegg. The land consolidation action of 1772 led to improved agricultural ownership structures and a scattered settlement pattern, while the characteristic town center on the ridge developed, primarily consisting of inns. During the Biedermeier period, there was briefly a bathhouse that utilized a sulfur spring. Sulzberg was part of Bavaria from 1805 to 1814 and has been part of Vorarlberg since 1861. The town had a train station on the Bregenzerwaldbahn from 1902 to 1983 and was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955. Today, Sulzberg is a vibrant community with 1851 residents, benefiting from a positive birth rate and improved road connections.
