II. St. Leonhard

History & character

From Early Settlements to Urban Life

St. Leonhard is one of the oldest districts of Graz, with roots dating back to the Middle Ages. The first documented mention of a church dates back to 1361. In 1809, during the French siege of the Graz Castle Hill, several battles occurred around the church, which served as a detention camp for around 400 Austrian prisoners. In the 19th century, the district developed into an important settlement area between the city center and the village of St. Leonhard. Numerous bourgeois houses were built here, particularly in Elisabeth and Leonhard streets, as well as in the Herz-Jesu district. The Herz-Jesu Church was consecrated in 1887. In 1900, St. Leonhard was separated as an independent district. Today, St. Leonhard is an urban district characterized by a mix of historical buildings and modern residential forms.
