History & character

From Forest Village to Modern District

Waltendorf, the 9th district of Graz, has an interesting name origin that is not definitively clarified. Some attribute the name to "Forest Village," as the town center was located behind a forest before the incorporation. Others see the connection to an early settlement commissioner. The district has a long history dating back to the 12th century, when the Sparbersbach estate was mentioned. Waltendorf was originally an independent municipality that later merged with Ruckerlberg. In 1938, the district was incorporated into the city of Graz. Today, Waltendorf is characterized by modern residential areas, such as the Berliner Ring, which was developed in the 1960s. The district offers a mix of urban life and green spaces, although the loss of greenery due to new construction in recent years is noticeable.
