History & character
From Independent Municipality to City Boundary
Ries was established in 1850 as an independent municipality in the eastern part of Graz and was part of the municipality of Kainbach until its incorporation in 1938. The central traffic route, Riesstraße, was once part of an important trade road to Eastern Styria and Hungary. Between 1904 and 1948, the famous Ries races took place here, attracting up to 70,000 spectators. The area had many taverns in the post-war period, most of which have now disappeared. The district does not have a historically developed center, but the old tollhouse at Riesplatz near LKH Graz serves as a reminder of the former tax border of the city. Today, Ries is characterized by quiet residential areas that stretch between the valleys of Ragnitz and Stifting, developed through active construction activity after World War II.
