History & character
From the Ancient Roman Road to a Modern Market Town
Feldkirchen bei Graz is one of the oldest settlements in the Graz Field and is located along a historic Roman road that connected Flavia Solva with the Danube region. By the 9th century, Feldkirchen had already become a religious center in the Graz area, long before a parish was established in Graz. The name "Veltchirchen" from 1144 refers to a church standing freely in the field, which gave the settlement its name. Over the years, Feldkirchen has merged with Graz and has developed into a market town that today has around 6,600 inhabitants.
Today, Feldkirchen is characterized by its quiet location south of Graz. The municipality includes several localities, such as Lebern and Wagnitz, and is beautifully situated along the Mur River. Its proximity to the capital city Graz makes Feldkirchen an attractive place to live, combining rural charm with urban amenities.
