History & character
From Burial Mounds to a Vibrant Community
Premstätten is a market town in the Graz-Umgebung district that emerged from the former municipalities of Unterpremstätten and Zettling. The region has been settled since prehistoric times, as evidenced by numerous burial mounds. The first documented mention of the area dates back to 1164. Over the centuries, Schloss Premstätten changed hands multiple times, including the Saurau family, who lavishly expanded the castle in the 18th century. Over time, the castle was also used as a school until it closed in 1982. The parish church has its roots in the 14th century and has been expanded and remodeled several times.
Today, Premstätten is a vibrant community covering an area of 29 square kilometers, featuring both agricultural land and forested areas. Its geographical location in the Graz Basin and the Kaiserwald gives the town its unique character, offering both natural recreation and good access to the city of Graz.
