History & character
From Market Town to Memorial Site
Gratkorn is a market municipality in the Graz area, located by the Mur River and forming a widening of the Murtal valley. The region has been historically marked by various events, notably the tragic death marches in 1945, when Hungarian Jews sought refuge in Gratkorn while fleeing from persecution and met a tragic fate. This dark past led to the establishment of a memorial, inaugurated in 2016, that commemorates the harrowing events. Additionally, the remembrance of a ferry disaster in 1875, where many lives were lost, is part of the community's culture of remembrance. Today, Gratkorn is a vibrant municipality with around 8301 inhabitants, characterized by its geographical location and surrounding elevations such as the Hohe Rannach and Kanzelkogel. The various localities within the municipality offer a diverse living environment that combines both rural and urban elements.
