History & character
From Castle to Urban Neighborhood
Gösting, the 13th district of Graz, likely derives its name from the Slavic word gostinca meaning 'inn' or from gozd meaning 'mountain forest'. The castle on the Göstinger Ruinenberg and the associated village were established here before 1138. By 1430, the village consisted of 33 farms and some craftsmen, including two millers in the Müller quarter. After various historical changes, including the acquisition of the castle by the Counts of Attems in 1707 and its destruction by lightning in 1723, Gösting continued to evolve. From 1850 until 1938, Gösting was an independent municipality that was incorporated into Graz in 1938 and has been a city district since 1946. Today, Gösting is a quiet residential area characterized by its proximity to nature and historical substance.
