History & character
From Mur Suburb to Urban Center
Lend, the 4th district of Graz, has its roots in the northern part of the old Mur suburb, located on the right bank of the Mur. Since the 17th century, a significant north-south main connection has developed here, leading through Wiener Straße and Lendplatz. This traffic axis encouraged the settlement of hospitality businesses and commercial enterprises, especially with the opening of the new Graz main train station in 1844. The district was long regarded as a classic working-class area, where the Graz fire brigade also found its location. Changes in the 1960s led to traffic relief and the redesign of several streets into pedestrian zones.
Today, Lend is a vibrant district characterized by the development of an urban scene around Lendplatz and the Kunsthaus Graz. These changes, often perceived as gentrification, have given the district a new identity that connects both historical heritage and modern lifestyle.
