History & character

From Old Town to UNESCO World Heritage

The Innere Stadt is the 1st district of Graz and includes the historic old town with the Schlossberg and Stadtpark. It is bordered by the Mur, Wickenburggasse, Glacis, Jakominiplatz, and Radetzkystraße. In 1999, the Graz city center, which includes large parts of the Innere Stadt, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the unique preservation of its historical buildings. This is reflected in the newly installed street name signs bearing the UNESCO logo. Today, the Innere Stadt is largely a pedestrian zone, housing the city administration, shopping centers, street markets, museums, galleries, and numerous gastronomy establishments with popular outdoor dining areas. This makes it one of the busiest and most traffic-heavy districts of Graz.
