History & character
From Gravel Beds to Multicultural Life
The district of Gries, whose name derives from the Old High German term for gravel deposits, was long an affordable residential and commercial area for rafters, craftsmen, and traders. Due to its unprotected location and flood risk, solid construction only began to take shape in the 17th century. Gries has retained its multicultural character over the centuries. Tragic events like the November pogroms of 1938, during which the synagogue on Grieskai was burned down, marked the district's history. Today, the David-Herzog-Platz serves as a reminder of these events. The district of Gries now presents itself as a vibrant neighborhood shaped by its diversity and history.
