History & character

From Wercelsdorf to Wetzelsdorf

Wetzelsdorf, the 15th district of Graz, has its origins in 1144 when the area was first mentioned as 'Wercelsdorf'. The name derives from the Old High German personal name Wecil/Wezzelo. Over the centuries, Wetzelsdorf developed from several founding villages that were under various authorities, including the Benedictine monastery of Admont. In 1906, Wetzelsdorf was administratively separated from Eggenberg and became an independent municipality in 1914. In the 19th century, the district grew along the Southern Railway line and the Old Post Road, transforming into an industrial area with workers' quarters. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, Wetzelsdorf was incorporated into 'Greater Graz' and gained the status of an independent Graz district in 1946. Today, Wetzelsdorf is characterized by a mix of rural and urban elements.
