History & character
From Roman Road to Graz District
Straßgang, whose name derives from the Slavic word straža meaning "watch" or "tower", is the 16th district of Graz. The area is located along a historic traffic route that was already in use during Roman times. Originally cultivated by the Aribonens, it was transferred to the Archdiocese of Salzburg by Emperor Henry III in 1055. The southern Harterstraße is named after its founder Hartwig I of Bavaria. In 1938, the village of Straßgang was incorporated together with Puntigam as the 16th Graz district, while Puntigam became the 17th district in 1988. Today, Straßgang is characterized by its quiet location at the foot of Buchkogel and Florianiberg and includes most of the cadastral community Webling.
