History & character
From Family History to Modern Neighborhood
Puntigam is the 17th and youngest district of Graz. The name Puntigam originally comes from a family that owned a manor house with a tavern and brewery since the early modern period. This family gave rise to the Puntigam brewery in the 19th century. The Puntigam district was separated from the 16th district of Straßgang in 1988 and was incorporated into Graz in 1938, being combined with Straßgang. The boundaries of the district do not consistently follow the cadastral borders, which sets Puntigam apart from other Graz districts. Today, Puntigam is a diverse urban district that offers both residential and recreational opportunities and has an interesting history to reflect upon.
