VII. Liebenau

History & character

From Pleasant Meadows to Urban Life

The name Liebenau derives from 'pleasant meadow', reflecting the area's former landscape. In 1531, Sultan Suleiman camped with his army in Liebenau before crossing the Mur. The district was established in 1946 from several municipalities that had been integrated into Graz in 1938. Liebenau then included the cadastral communities that still exist today, among them the old Liebenau, which was called Vatersdorf until 1648. The region has a tumultuous history, including dark chapters such as the internment camp from the Nazi era and its use as a refugee camp after World War II. Today, Liebenau is an urban district characterized by a mix of residential areas and industrial remnants, continuously evolving.
