VI. Jakomini

History & character

From Land Acquisition to Residential Area

Jakomini, the 6th district of Graz, is named after Kaspar Andreas Ritter von Jacomini, who purchased most of the land south of the Eisernes Tor in 1784. This was made possible by an imperial decree that allowed for the decommissioning of the city fortifications and the sale of the fortress grounds. Jacomini sold the land to Graz citizens with the stipulation that they build on it, leading to the development of the Jakomini suburb by 1820. Some of the small-town buildings and narrow streets erected during that time are still preserved today. In 1900, Jakomini was newly established as the 6th district after parts of the 2nd district Leonhard were detached. The historic Kastellhof was demolished in 2010, and in the early 2020s, most buildings of the Kirchnerkaserne were torn down to make way for a new residential development.
