History & character
From Vineyard Area to Modern Community
Hart bei Graz, formerly known as Hart bei St. Peter, developed in the 16th century from settlements of an extensive vineyard area. The name derives from the old word hart, meaning large forest, and has been documented since 1608. Settlement likely dates back to the Franks in the 8th century, while Slavs had already been living in the region since the 6th century. In 1848, the municipality was formed following the abolition of serfdom and was renamed Hart bei Graz in 1986. In 2022, an urban design competition was announced to redevelop the town center to enhance quality of life and revitalize the core area.
Today, Hart bei Graz is a vibrant community in the eastern Styrian hill country with 5,570 residents. Its geographical location between Graz and Laßnitzhöhe, along with the surrounding waterways, shapes the character of the town. Covering an area of 11.02 square kilometers and featuring a mix of agricultural land, gardens, and forests, Hart offers a tranquil, nature-oriented living environment.
