History & character

From Residence to Urban Living Space

Eggenberg, the 14th district of Graz, owes its name to Eggenberg Castle and its founding family, built in 1625. The district's history dates back to the late Stone Age, with finds from the Roman period indicating early settlement. In the Middle Ages, the region was characterized by agriculture and viticulture. From 1850, Eggenberg transformed from a rural castle village into a working-class community, driven by the establishment of the Reininghaus brewery and industrial expansion around the train station. In 1906, Eggenberg was elevated to market town status and grew to become the most populous market town in Austria during the interwar period. The political upheavals of the 1930s left their mark, as did the incorporation into Graz in 1938.

Today, Eggenberg is a vibrant district characterized by a mix of historical and modern elements. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Eggenberg Castle, along with numerous social and educational facilities, makes the district an attractive place to live.
