III. Geidorf

History & character

From Suburb to Urban Oasis

Geidorf, originally known as "Gaidorf," meaning "village on flat land," was once part of the Graz suburb. The name indicates a long history that dates back to the Urnfield period, although no continuous settlement over 3,000 years can be confirmed. The historical core of Geidorf is located in a small settlement between Heinrichstraße and Leechkirche, which was expanded in the 19th century to include a bourgeois residential area. Here, the typical gardens of the Gründerzeit can be found, while behind them, a villa district extends to the slopes of the Rosenhain. In the past, mills and manufactories were the main economic drivers of the district, and the Graz sugar factory was one of the first to operate a steam engine.

Today, Geidorf is a vibrant urban district, densely populated in parts, especially near the city park and the old core. Historic buildings shape the cityscape, while the outskirts of the Rosenhain feature a quieter, less dense population and are popular recreational areas.
