History & character

From Pilgrimage to Urban Community

Mariatrost, formerly known as Maria Trost, is the 11th district of Graz and has a history that dates back to the 15th century when the pilgrimage to Maria Trost began. Until the 1930s, the name Maria Trost was largely unknown, and the area was referred to by the community name Fölling. Before its incorporation into Graz, there was a market community called Maria Trost, which included the cadastral communities of Wenisbuch and Fölling. During this time, there were numerous associations and facilities, including the Sanatorium Maria Grün and the Maria Trost spa, which were among the most well-known in the Graz area. In 1946, Mariatrost was officially recognized as a separate district of Graz and has since developed into a quiet residential area.

Today, Mariatrost is characterized by its proximity to nature, with the Mariatroster stream as a central axis and adjacent recreational areas like Leechwald and Platte. The idyllic surroundings, gentle elevations, and historic basilica make the district an attractive place to live, offering both tranquility and a connection to urban life.

Climate & environment

On hot summer days, local cooling matters. Water close by cools the surroundings noticeably.

Trees & woody vegetation

Where trees or woody vegetation grow, from satellite imagery (Copernicus, 5 m, 2021 data). The City of Graz tree register only records city trees along streets and in parks and barely covers this district, so the satellite view shows the green here.
