History & character
From Roman Times to Modern Industry
The area of today's Andritz has been settled since Roman times. The name Andritz, derived from Slavic meaning "fast-flowing water," was first documented in 1265 as "Endritz." The old villages of Oberandritz, Unterandritz, and St. Veit long characterized the region until an iron foundry and a machine factory were established in 1852, marking an industrial shift. In 1850, Andritz became an independent municipality and was incorporated into the city of Graz in 1938. With this incorporation, the district was initially named Graz Nord, which was changed to Andritz in 1946.
Today, Andritz is the largest district by area in Graz and features a harmonious blend of nature and urban life. Idyllic hills and nature reserves, such as the Riel Pond, provide recreation and a diverse flora and fauna. The mix of historical buildings and modern developments shapes the character of the district, which combines both rural and urban elements.

Climate & environment
On hot summer days, local cooling matters. Some water nearby brings a bit of cooling.
