History & character
From Frankish Bishop to Modern Village
Henndorf am Wallersee, a municipality in the Salzburg region, has a deep-rooted history that dates back to the Middle Ages. During this time, the Frankish Bishop Rupert of Salzburg worked nearby and influenced the region. Later, the village was under the rule of the Lords of Tann, who held sway until the 14th century. The population grew over the centuries, while living conditions were often complicated by superstition and social tensions. The Coalition Wars in the early 19th century also left their mark, as French troops marched through Henndorf, confronting the village with soldiers and prisoners of war.
Today, Henndorf am Wallersee is a vibrant community with around 5182 residents, located near the state capital of Salzburg. Agriculture still forms the foundation of the local economy, while the village gradually adapts to modern living conditions. Despite the challenges of the past, Henndorf has developed into a quiet residential area that combines tradition and progress.
