Official city hiking trail 9
City hiking trail 9: Tower trail
Tower to tower: the fortification line from the 1830s.
In the 19th century Linz was a fortress town: a ring of defensive towers of the Maximilian fortification circled the city. This trail links surviving towers across the heights and edges of Urfahr, through forest and settlements, with history at every stop and city views in between.
Getting there: 19 to Leonding Turm 9 - Stadtmuseum, 123 m to the trailhead. Loop trail: you finish where you started.
The official route and its data
The coloured line is the official, signposted route of the series, as mapped in OpenStreetMap. Toggle a data layer, or tap anywhere on the map to see trees, noise, heat and travel times for that exact spot.
Tap anywhere on the map for the full “what’s here?” of that spot.
About 266 m of climbing and 261 m of descent, between 260 and 396 m above sea level. Sampled every 25 m from open elevation data; walking time uses the standard hiking formula (4 km/h plus 300 m of climb per hour).
For the history-curious and anyone who wants to walk the green belt above Urfahr in one go: the towers give the trail its thread, the places between them the picture of living there.
Most towers are privately owned or locked and can only be seen from outside. The appeal lies in the walk and the views, not in open doors.
What changes along the way
Every 200 metres of the trail, sampled against wohnwahn’s data. The curves run from the start (left) to the finish (right). In short: 45% green along the built-up stretches · 68% quiet · 266 m of climbing.
Values are 0 to 100 per 250 m residential cell. Forest and fields have no cells, so the profile honestly pauses there; curves only appear once they cover at least half the trail. Source: heat model from surface sealing, environmental noise map, green-space proximity, footfall and own transit routing.
