Enns

History & character

From Roman Military City to Modern Town

Enns is a town with a long history that dates back to the first settlements around 4000 years ago. The region was inhabited by Celts around 400 BC, and the Roman military camp Lauriacum, established as a town in 212, played a central role in early history. Over the centuries, the settlement evolved, gaining significance with the construction of the Enisiburg in the 10th century and the establishment of a market in the 12th century. The town charter from 1212 is the oldest surviving original document and underscores the city's historical relevance.

Today, Enns presents itself as a modern town with 12,191 inhabitants, located along the Danube and the Enns River. It is also the first Cittàslow town in Austria and is characterized by its 60-meter-high town tower as a landmark. Enns combines historical roots with contemporary life and offers an attractive environment for its residents.

How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation.
