History & character
From Celtic Settlement to Market Town
Asten is a market town in the Linz-Land district, first documented as Astina in the year 1073. Originally part of the Duchy of Bavaria, Asten came under the Duchy of Austria in the 12th century and was later assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns. Archaeological findings indicate that the region was already inhabited during the La Tène period, highlighting the long history of the area. Over the centuries, Asten has been shaped by various historical events, including the Napoleonic Wars and the American occupation period after World War II, when a housing camp for Hungarian refugees was established.
Today, Asten, with its 7681 inhabitants, is a small but vibrant community that features a blend of rural charm and urban influence. The municipality comprises several districts, including Asten, Fisching, Raffelstetten, and Ipfdorf. With a total area of 8.48 km², Asten is the smallest municipality in the Linz-Land district, with agricultural land and forests making up a significant part of the area.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation.
