Method: proximity to the big open waters per inhabited 250 m cell (Lake Neusiedl, the Leitha, the Wulka and the bathing lakes count), bigger and closer water weighs more, share of cells above the threshold, clipped to the real boundary. Channelled races and small brooks are deliberately excluded, they don’t make a waterside home. A district scores high when many homes sit near water, not because of one exclusive shore.

Deeper blue means closer to open water. Every square is an inhabited 250 m cell; Lake Neusiedl, the Leitha, the Wulka and the bathing lakes count, the drainage ditches of the Wulka basin do not.

Winden am See is the case that proves it: the municipality carries the lake in its name and still not one of its 63 inhabited cells lies by open water. Between the village and the lake lie kilometres of reed. Oggau, ten kilometres further south, reaches 59 per cent.
Six municipalities here carry the lake in their name, and their share of homes by open water runs from 59 per cent down to nil: Oggau 59, Moerbisch 44, Neusiedl am See 21, Purbach 15, Breitenbrunn 9, Winden am See 0. The reed belt is the reason, kilometres of it between the edge of the village and open water. The name on the sign proves nothing, the map does.

The lake is wide, shallow, warm and hidden behind a reed belt, with sailing, tourism and season; the Leitha is a river with wooded banks and bathing lakes beside it, quieter and closer to Vienna. Rust and Neufeld an der Leitha show both sides, and they live completely differently.
Trausdorf an der Wulka for example: many waterside homes and still ≈ 20 minutes from Domplatz by transit. Neufeld an der Leitha is the textbook case: 83 per cent of homes near water, the highest figure in the market, on the railway line towards Vienna.
