History & character
From Celts to Altenberg near Linz
Altenberg near Linz is a market municipality with a rich history dating back to the Neolithic period. Findings suggest that nomadic indigenous people lived in the area early on. In pre-Christian times, the Celtic tribes of the Boier and Narister settled here. The development of the locality began with the Slavic settlement in the 8th century and the Bavarian settlers in the 9th century. The name Bayring refers to the Bavarian roots of the first villagers. In the 12th century, the first written mentions of villages such as Bairing, Willersdorf, and Weitrag were recorded. The main town of the municipality, originally known as Altenperge, was first mentioned in a Passau document around 1245. Altenberg initially belonged to the Duchy of Bavaria and, since the 12th century, to the Duchy of Austria. Today, Altenberg near Linz is a quiet community in the upper Mühlviertel, surrounded by idyllic landscapes and boasting a steadily growing population.

How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation.
