History & character
From Tafersheim to Steyregg
The history of Steyregg dates back to the Neolithic period, as archaeological finds attest. In the early Middle Ages, the settlement of Tafersheim emerged, gaining significance through salt trade. The name Tafersheim underwent various changes over the centuries and originally referred to a larger area that included settlements both north and south of the Danube. From the 12th century, Steyregg developed with the construction of a castle, and the town was granted city rights in 1482. Despite this distinction, Steyregg remained overshadowed by the nearby capital Linz and was characterized by a rural atmosphere. The construction of the Summerauer railway and a railway bridge in the 19th century brought modest growth. After World War II, the town gained recognition through the environmental movement. Today, Steyregg is a municipal town in the Linz area, offering a quiet, rural atmosphere with its 5012 residents.
