Student housing in Innsbruck

Roughly one in four people in Innsbruck is a student, a higher share than in any other city we cover. That shapes the housing market, and it shows most clearly in one number: a place in a hall of residence costs between 344 and 789 euros a month, depending only on which hall you get into.

The range is the point

These are the figures we checked at the providers themselves on 2 September 2026, not taken from a listings portal. All are all-inclusive, so they are comparable:

HallPer monthWhat you get
Akademikerhilfe, Müllerheim344 €the cheapest place we found in the city
StUV, Zollerstraße 3380 €furnished single room of 15 to 20 m² in a student flatshare, weekly cleaning of shared areas
Akademikerhilfe, Maximilianstraße 8580 €the upper end of that provider
STUWO, Kranebitter Allee 30 (category B)729 €single room of 11 to 12 m² inside a shared two-person apartment
STUWO, Kranebitter Allee 30 (category A)789 €single apartment of 21 to 23 m² with its own kitchenette and bathroom

A factor of 2.3 for a room in the same city, and the most expensive is the newest building. Anyone who looks at a single price list walks away with a wrong idea of the going rate. The STUWO prices apply from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027; the others were current on the day we checked.

Where the halls are

Two providers publish how many places they have, and those numbers say more about where students actually live than any ranking:

home4students, Technikerstraße 7
259 places, a few minutes walk from the technical campus. The largest single hall we found in the city.
home4students, Höttinger Au
229 places, a few minutes from the Innrain campus and the medical university.
home4students, EUREGIO Campus
the third house of the same provider.
STUWO, Kranebitter Allee 30
87 places, in the west towards the airport.
StUV, Zollerstraße 3
single rooms in student flatshares, close to the centre.
WIST, Studentenheim Panorama, Fürstenweg 174
in the west of the city.

The clustering is not accidental: the two big houses sit at the two campuses, and that is exactly the split that matters here. The Innrain campus and the medical university are one place, the technical campus in Hötting West is another, and the walk between them is not short.

Flatshares: we are honest about this one

A flatshare is the normal way to live as a student in Innsbruck, and "wg zimmer innsbruck" is searched 720 times a month. We cannot serve that: across all of Austria we currently hold a single flatshare listing. Rather than show you an empty result list, here is where flatshares are actually found in Innsbruck: the ÖH housing exchange, the classic notice boards at the university, WG-Gesucht and the local Facebook groups. We would rather send you away than waste your time.

When to apply

The pattern is the same at every provider and it is the single biggest lever you have. Halls fill from spring for the winter semester; by September the good houses are taken and what is left is the expensive end. If you know in spring that you are coming, apply then, even if the admission is not final. A place can be declined, a missing place cannot be conjured up in September.

What the location decides here

Innsbruck is narrow. The valley floor is where almost everything is, and it carries the motorway, the railway and the through roads at the same time. Three things are worth checking before you sign, and all three we can measure for any address:

Noise
The city is officially mapped across its whole area. The loudest corridor is in Wilten, where motorway, railway and road come together. Aircraft noise reaches the western districts, including the area around the clinic.
Sun in winter
On the valley floor the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees above the horizon while the mountains to the south rise 10 to 19 degrees. A north-facing room on the valley floor can go without direct sun for months.
The walk to your campus
Innrain and the technical campus are different worlds for a daily commute. Check the actual route, not the map distance.

Frequently asked questions

What does a room in a hall of residence cost in Innsbruck?
Between 344 and 789 euros a month, all-inclusive, depending on the hall. The cheapest we found is the Akademikerhilfe Müllerheim at 344 euros, the most expensive a single apartment at STUWO at 789. A furnished single room in a student flatshare at StUV costs 380 euros.
How many students does Innsbruck have?
Around 30,800: the University of Innsbruck had 27,436 students in 2025, the Medical University roughly 3,341 plus around 350 doctoral candidates. At about 132,000 inhabitants that is roughly one in four people in the city.
When should I apply for a hall place?
In spring for the following winter semester. By September the affordable houses are usually full, and what remains is the expensive end.
Do you have flatshare rooms?
No. Across all of Austria we currently hold a single flatshare listing, so we do not pretend to be a flatshare search. Try the ÖH housing exchange, the university notice boards, WG-Gesucht and local groups.
Which district should I look in?
That depends on your campus, not on a general ranking. Innrain and the medical university are in the centre and west, the technical campus is in Hötting West, and the walk between them is real. Pick the location by your own daily route.

And what does wohnwahn do here?

We do not run a hall. What we do is the part that no listing tells you: what an address is actually like. Noise from the official map, sun against the mountain horizon, heat in the valley and the real travel time to your own campus. Innsbruck is being built up at the moment, and these pages already work.
