Absam

History & character

From the First Mention to Pilgrimage Tradition

Absam is first mentioned between 995 and 1005 in the records of the Brixen diocese as "Abazânes". The name may either derive from the vulgar Latin term *abbatiani, meaning 'land belonging to the abbot', or from the Celtic personal name Abudios. Early industrialization began in the Absam area, particularly due to salt mining in the Halltal. The place gained significant religious importance through a Marian apparition in 1797, when an image of the Madonna was discovered on a window. This apparition was interpreted as a divine sign during a time of great hardship, leading to an increase in pilgrims seeking comfort and help. Today, Absam is a pilgrimage site on the Camino de Santiago, and the pilgrimage church was elevated to a minor basilica in 2000. The community is located at the edge of the Karwendel mountains, offering a quiet location near the towns of Hall in Tirol and Innsbruck.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In the Inn valley the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees at midday, while the mountain ridges to the south rise 10 to 19 degrees above the city. Measured for 21 December, the terrain costs just under two hours in Hötting, a good two in the city centre, close to three at Sieglanger and six and a half in Amras below the Patscherkofel.
