Arzl

History & character

From the Little Castle to an Innsbruck District

Arzl, located in the northeast of Innsbruck, was first mentioned in 1173 as 'Arcella' in a document. The name likely originates from the Latin 'arcella', meaning 'little castle'. Originally, Arzl was an agricultural village that remained an independent cadastral community until its incorporation into Innsbruck in 1940. Mühlau, which once belonged to Arzl, became independent in 1740 and was also incorporated into Innsbruck in 1938. The church, dedicated to Saints John the Baptist, John the Evangelist, and John of Nepomuk, was first documented in 1237 and underwent several structural changes, including a Gothic reconstruction in 1480 and a Baroque renovation in the 18th century.

Today, Arzl is a district characterized by a mix of residential areas and natural landscapes. The area's development was influenced by the establishment of new transport routes in the 16th century and the settlement around the former state shooting range. The district coat of arms, created in 1993, features the landmark of the Kalvarienbergkirche, symbolizing its affiliation with Innsbruck.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In the Inn valley the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees at midday, while the mountain ridges to the south rise 10 to 19 degrees above the city. Measured for 21 December, the terrain costs just under two hours in Hötting, a good two in the city centre, close to three at Sieglanger and six and a half in Amras below the Patscherkofel.
