History & character
From Early Settlement to Industrial Culture
Mühlau is a cadastral community and a district in the north of Innsbruck, with a history dating back to the Late Bronze Age, as evidenced by graves from the urn field culture. The place was first mentioned in 1288 as "Muelaenne". The name Mühlau, which was established in official documents in the 19th century, derives from the mills that have operated by the Mühlauer Bach for centuries. In the Middle Ages and Early Modern period, the Stift Wilten was a significant landowner in the region. Mühlau has a long industrial tradition, including the production of armor and bronze statues. From the 18th century, the metalworking industry was supplemented by grain and sawmills. The first Mühlauer Inn bridge was built in 1581 under Archduke Ferdinand II to improve the connection to Hall. Until 1938, Mühlau was an independent municipality before being incorporated into Innsbruck. Today, Mühlau is characterized by its natural location on the slopes of the Nordkette and the tranquil residential atmosphere supported by the Mühlauer Bach and the surrounding mountains.
