History & character
From Kohlstatt to a Residential Area
Dreiheiligen-Schlachthof is a district of Innsbruck, with a history dating back to the 15th century. Originally part of Saggen, the area was acquired by the city of Innsbruck in 1453. Initially, a silver smelting facility was established, followed by a charcoal production site, giving the area the name Kohlstatt. With the harnessing of the water power from the Sill and Sill Canal, various industries settled, including mills and forges. In the 17th century, the Dreiheiligenkirche was built, which named the district. From the 19th century, Dreiheiligen developed into a popular residential area, particularly due to the influx resulting from the new railway line. The first houses for workers were constructed, and in 1898, the Vinzenz houses were built for socially disadvantaged people. In the 1920s, the Schlachthof block was created, one of the first municipal housing complexes in Innsbruck. Today, Dreiheiligen-Schlachthof is a narrow, elongated area bordered by the railway viaducts and the Sill. The district features a high population density and is characterized by a mix of residential buildings, cultural institutions, and historical architecture.
