History & character
From the Old Town to the New Town in Innsbruck
The city center of Innsbruck includes the Old Town founded in 1180 and the later expansions known as the New Town. The Old Town, located on the right bank of the Inn, is the nucleus of the city and was originally surrounded by a ring wall and a moat. The city quickly grew beyond these boundaries, developing along the Maria-Theresien-Straße. In the first centuries, this area primarily housed craft and trade businesses. From the 17th century onwards, the buildings in the Baroque and Rococo styles emerged. The New Town was later incorporated into the city of Innsbruck and has continuously expanded. Today, the city center is a vibrant district featuring a mix of historical and modern elements, with numerous educational institutions, cultural facilities, and a high population density.
