History & character
From Roman Settlement to District
Wilten is a historically significant place in the south of Innsbruck, with its first settlements dating back to the Urnfield culture around 1000 BC. Under the Romans, the settlement of Veldidena emerged as an important supply station on the Brenner route. In the 9th century, the Wilten Abbey is said to have been founded, before being handed over to the Premonstratensians in 1138. The area's development continued until it was incorporated into the city of Innsbruck in 1904. The construction of the Arlberg Railway and the state railway station in 1883 led to an urban transformation that shaped the original rural village. Today, Wilten features a characteristic urban landscape with significant religious buildings like the Wiltener Basilica and the Abbey Church, highlighting the cultural heritage of the district.
