History & character
From Little Meadow to a District
Pradl, whose name is likely derived from the Latin ‚pratellum‘, meaning ‚little meadow‘, was mentioned as early as between 1173 and 1182 in a deed of exchange. The area on the right bank of the Sill was cultivated even before the Bavarian settlement. In the 19th century, Pradl experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to the Innsbruck train station and the establishment of industrial enterprises. In 1904, Pradl was separated from Amras and incorporated into Innsbruck. During the interwar period, several municipal housing complexes were built, shaping social housing in Tyrol. The current Pradler parish church was built between 1905 and 1908 in the neo-Romanesque style and is a central point of the district.
Today, Pradl is the most populous district of Innsbruck and is characterized by a mix of historical elements and modern residential buildings. The district offers a quiet living atmosphere with good connections to the city center and is known for its variety of leisure opportunities.
