History & character
From the Salt Road to Recreation
Lans is a municipality whose name likely derives from the Illyrian language and was first mentioned in 1177 as predium Lannes. The settlement was located on a trade route established by the Romans, which gained significance as a salt road in the late Middle Ages. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Lans became known for its farmer's theatre. Starting in 1845, the development of country houses and villas began, changing the character of this formerly agrarian community. Tourism increased in 1900 with the construction of the Mittelgebirgsbahn, but a devastating fire in 1902 destroyed large parts of the village. After World War II, mechanization in agriculture led to emigration, while since the 1960s, more and more city dwellers moved to Lans, further shaping its landscape. Today, Lans is a popular recreational area featuring a golf course and the Lanser See, which is fed by underground springs.
