Igls

History & character

From Migration Period to Olympic Village

Igls, a village and district of Innsbruck, has a long history that dates back to the Migration Period, where burial mounds were discovered. The place is closely associated with the 1064 m high Goldbichl, a significant archaeological site. The name Igls may derive from the 11th-century Vogt Eigilis or from Saint Ægidius in the 8th century. In the Middle Ages, castles were built nearby to secure the trade route along the Roman road, including the Hohenburg first mentioned in 1345. The parish church, known since 1286, was remodeled in the 15th century and baroque-style in 1705. In the 19th century, Igls transformed from a rural village into a summer retreat with villas and hotels. The area gained international fame through the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 and 1976, which featured bobsled and luge events as well as the Olympic downhill skiing from the Patscherkofel. The sports facilities are still used for international competitions today.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In the Inn valley the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees at midday, while the mountain ridges to the south rise 10 to 19 degrees above the city. Measured for 21 December, the terrain costs just under two hours in Hötting, a good two in the city centre, close to three at Sieglanger and six and a half in Amras below the Patscherkofel.
