History & character
From Prehistory to Market Town
Völs is a market municipality in the Tyrolean Inn Valley, with a history that dates back to prehistoric times. The oldest finds date back to the 3rd millennium BC, indicating early settlement. Roman coin finds and the significant bust of the Völser Bacchus from the 1st century AD testify to the cultural importance of the site in antiquity. The first written mentions date back to the years 1183/88. The name Völs may be connected to other places in the Eisack and Inn region. In 1312, Völs was established as a tax municipality and was granted market town status in 2000. Today, Völs is a quaint community with 7357 residents (as of January 1, 2026), located to the west of Innsbruck and characterized by its position in the Inn Valley.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In the Inn valley the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees at midday, while the mountain ridges to the south rise 10 to 19 degrees above the city. Measured for 21 December, the terrain costs just under two hours in Hötting, a good two in the city centre, close to three at Sieglanger and six and a half in Amras below the Patscherkofel.
