Kematen in Tirol

History & character

From Old Chamber to Modern Living

The name Kematen in Tirol may derive from the Latin word "Caminata," meaning "heated chamber." The town was first documented around 1143 as "Kemenatin." The region has a tumultuous history, with both the Abbey of Dießen and the Abbey of Wilten having holdings here. In 1703, Kematen was plundered and burned by Bavarians expelled from Innsbruck, resulting in no buildings older than 300 years remaining today, except for an old cellar vault. During the Nazi era, up to 2,000 forced laborers were employed in the municipality.

Today, Kematen is a small community in the Inn Valley, characterized by a quiet, rural atmosphere. The old building stock in the district of Afling is almost entirely preserved, while the main town features more modern elements. The geographical location at the confluence of the Melach and the Inn shapes the landscape and provides a connection between the Upper and Lower Inn Valleys.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In the Inn valley the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees at midday, while the mountain ridges to the south rise 10 to 19 degrees above the city. Measured for 21 December, the terrain costs just under two hours in Hötting, a good two in the city centre, close to three at Sieglanger and six and a half in Amras below the Patscherkofel.
