History & character
From Ouxumenes to Axams
The first documentary mention of Axams dates back to the 10th century when the place was recorded as Ouxumenes in the tradition book of the Brixen diocese. Over the centuries, the name underwent numerous changes until it eventually became Axams. The municipality was significant in the Middle Ages, notably with the establishment of the Michaels Chapel and the parish church. The area was also a favored hunting ground for Maximilian I and underwent various infrastructural developments in the 19th and 20th centuries, such as electrification and the expansion of public transport. Today, Axams is a rural community that is attractive due to its proximity to Innsbruck and short commuting times. The municipality has established itself as a model community for integration and offers the Elisabethinum Axams, a significant support center for children with special needs.
