History & character
From Rhaetian Settlement to Residential Community
Birgitz has a long history that dates back to the 1st century BC, when a Rhaetian settlement existed on the wooded hill 'Hohe Birga'. This settlement was destroyed by fire during the Roman conquest of Tyrol in the late 1st century AD. In the Middle Ages, the area was resettled, with Birgitz first documented as 'Purgitz' in 1286. The name derives from a pre-Roman term that describes a high-lying locality. Over the centuries, the village faced various challenges, such as the plague in the 17th century, which led to the construction of the first church. Birgitz gained political independence in 1811. Today, Birgitz is a small community with 1486 residents, located at the foot of the Kalkkögel. Its geographical position between Axams and Götzens, along with increasing development in the 1960s, has resulted in a merging with Götzens. Birgitz has established itself as a residential area for commuters in the Innsbruck catchment area, offering a quiet quality of life in nature.
