History & character
From Roman Military Station to Market Town
Zirl has a long history that dates back to the La Tène period. In the 4th/5th century, the Roman military station Teriolis was located here, which was converted into a hunting lodge by Maximilian I around 1500. The place was first mentioned in a document in 799 and served as an important traffic junction on the Roman road Via Raetia to Augsburg. The castle ruin Fragenstein, founded in 1209, is another testament to the regional history, although it has been in decline since 1703. Zirl was also one of the centers for the construction of Christmas cribs in the 17th century. Over the years, the community has suffered from floods and fires that have repeatedly altered the town's appearance, most recently in 1908 due to a major fire. In recent decades, Zirl has developed into a residential community, officially becoming a market town in 1984. Today, Zirl is characterized by a harmonious blend of nature and quality of life, reflected in its growing population.
