Hötting West

History & character

From Höttinger Gasse to the Technical Faculty

The history of Hötting West is closely linked to the old road from Innsbruck to the west, which initially ran along the slopes of the Nordkette. Under Archduke Ferdinand II, this road was moved to the valley floor in the 16th century, leading to the creation of Kranebitter Allee. The first buildings in Kranebitten, including the Chapel of the Visitation and the Kranebitten Inn, date back to the 17th century. From 1912, with the commissioning of the Mittenwald Railway, construction activity increased in the then-independent municipality of Hötting. After its incorporation in 1938, Hötting West fully merged with the settlement area of Innsbruck. A provisional church was built in 1936, which was later replaced by St. George's Parish Church. In the late 1960s, buildings for the newly established Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture and the Viktor Franz Hess House were constructed on the western edge of the Lohbach settlement, now part of the Technical Campus. The character of Hötting West is thus shaped by a blend of historical development and modern academic use.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In the Inn valley the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees at midday, while the mountain ridges to the south rise 10 to 19 degrees above the city. Measured for 21 December, the terrain costs just under two hours in Hötting, a good two in the city centre, close to three at Sieglanger and six and a half in Amras below the Patscherkofel.
